Freight train hits, kills man in Wareham

WAREHAM - A man was struck and killed by a freight train while fishing on a bridge in Wareham Thursday afternoon. Mass Coastal Railroad said the man walked in front of a train and was struck.

The victim has been identified as 56-year-old Christopher Cater of Dorchester. After he was struck, he fell into the water under the Cohasset Narrows Bridge. He was pulled from the water and taken to Tobey Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The conductor of the train jumped into the water in an attempt to locate the victim. The conductor was not hurt.

The Plymouth County District Attorney said all crossing barriers were properly functioning and the horn sounded repeatedly as it traveled by the victim.

The train would have been going about 25 mph through the area, Mass Coastal Railroad said. The company added the bridge is a known area for trespassing, and trains are repeatedly asking for help from police for people on or too close to the tracks
