Man Dies After Car Plunges Into Ocean In Marshfield

MARSHFIELD (CBS) – A man has died after the car he was in plunged into the ocean in Marshfield Monday night.

Marshfield Police Chief Phil Tavares says the car went down the boat ramp at the Town Pier and was completely submerged. Several off duty firefighters, police officers and a civilian jumped into the water to try and save the man.

Crews were eventually able to attach a cable to the vehicle, pull it up out of the water and get the man out.

The victim is a man in his 40s from the town of Kingston. He was transported to South Shore Hospital and pronounced dead.

"Lots of people here put themselves at risk to try and do the right thing and to help somebody that was certainly in need," Chief Tavares said. "It's a terrible tragedy."

Tavares says the investigation has been turned over to the State Police.
