Man Charged In Drunken, High-Speed Chase Had Been 'Celebrating St. Patrick's Day'
TRURO (CBS) -- A 22-year-old who allegedly led police on a drunken, high-speed chase Tuesday told officers he had been celebrating St. Patrick's Day, according to authorities.
Truro police said a 1998 Toyota Camry was clocked at 98 mph in a 45 mph zone on Route 6 at 6:41 p.m.. As an officer activated his blue lights and went after the speeding car, it continued north and nearly struck another vehicle before crashing into a patch of trees.
Nicholas Hayes, of Gardner, was unable to perform sobriety tests, according to police, and faces charges including operating under the influence of liquor, speeding and failing to stop for police.
"Mr. Hayes told officers he had been celebrating St. Patrick's Day and reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol at several establishments over the previous several hours," police said in a statement.
Hayes is expected to be arraigned in Orleans District Court on Wednesday morning.
