Maine Police: Massachusetts Woman Dies After Car Accident

HOWLAND, Maine (AP) — A 75-year-old Massachusetts woman has died after police say she tried to make an illegal U-turn on Interstate 95 in Maine.

Maine State Police say Elaine Butkus, of Phillipston, Massachusetts, tried to make a left turn into a median crossover reserved for emergency vehicles on Sunday afternoon when she was struck by another car in the town of Howland.

Butkus was airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she died.

Three people in the other car were taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln with non-life threatening injuries.
