Lynn Brings Ice Skating Back To City Common

LYNN (CBS) --- It's so cold, there's really not much you can do outside except maybe make an ice skating rink.

That is exactly what they're doing in Lynn along South Common Street.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey reports

City Councilor Rich Colucci was there Tuesday morning as thousands of gallons of water flooded the common.

Colucci remembers skating on the common as a child and wanted today's children to benefit.

"It's an old idea, brought to life again," Colucci said.

The city last had a skating rink on the common in the late 1960's, he said.

"It's good for the kids and it's free," he said.

When the idea was floated before city councilors, Colucci said everyone was supportive.

Because the rink is free admission, the city doesn't have any liability. There are however, no skates to rent at the rink so children are asked to pack their own.

With low temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday morning, the rink is expected to be ready for skating on Wednesday.
