Lowell Police Identify Officer On Leave After Wednesday Shooting
LOWELL (CBS) – The Lowell police officer who shot a man that fired at him during a traffic stop Wednesday morning has been identified.
Officer Patrick F. Casey was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation, which Lowell police said is standard procedure.
On Wednesday at about 3:30 a.m., police said Casey pulled over a driver who ran a red light and did not have his headlights turned on.
Lowell resident Darris Newton, 23, then allegedly stepped out of his car and fired multiple rounds from a handgun. Police said Casey returned fire, striking Newton in the chest and arm. Casey was not struck or injured during the exchange.
Newton was scheduled to be arraigned from his hospital bed Wednesday afternoon, charged with armed assault with intent to murder and other gun and motor vehicle charges.
Casey graduated from the Lowell Police Academy in 2013.
