Local Company Wins Bid To Run Boston's First Night

BOSTON (CBS) -- The city of Boston has chosen a company to run next year's First Night celebration.

After announcing it can no longer afford to host the massive New Year's Eve festivities, two companies bid on the contract, and a local organization won.

Boston-based Conventures, Inc. was awarded a one-year contract to manage and direct First Night for 2016.

Conventures and an LA-based event production company had both bid on the contract after Mayor Marty Walsh appealed to private companies to take over the financially strapped First Night from the city.

Walsh said he was pleased with the bidding.

"I think we're looking at a scaled-down version," Walsh said. "But you're still going to have the fireworks, I'm sure, and all the great displays that you need."

WBZ-TV is the official television sponsor of First Night.
