Loaded Gun Found In Carry-On At Logan

BOSTON (CBS) -- A loaded gun was found in a 26-year-old man's carry-on luggage at Logan Airport on Monday.

The TSA said agents discovered the 9 mm Smith & Wesson firearm in a bag at a security checkpoint. The man was headed to Richmond International Airport, the TSA said.

TSA workers notified police, who cited the male passenger on a local charge, according to the TSA.

The penalty for bringing a firearm to a checkpoint can range from $1,500 to $11,000.

It's the second time the TSA found firearms in carry-on baggage at Logan this year. In 2014, six firearms were discovered, the TSA said.

The TSA noted that whenever weapons are found, the screening process for all passengers at the checkpoint are delayed.

"TSA takes the discovery of prohibited items seriously and urges all passengers to check the contents of their bags before leaving home to ensure they are not bringing any prohibited items to the airport — including firearms, firearm parts and ammunition," the agency said. "Firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags, but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline."
