Lifeguards Rescue Two Young Brothers Off Maine's Rough Ocean Waters

YORK, Maine (CBS) -- Two young Massachusetts brothers who were swept out to sea in Maine are safe with family now, thanks to the swift actions of the lifeguards on duty.

The two brothers, ages 10 and 14, were on a family vacation at Short Sands Beach when they were swept into an area infamously known as "the washing machine." They were trapped in a spot where six foot waves constantly crash into the rocks at every angle.

It's likely the boys wouldn't have survived if the lifeguards hadn't quickly jumped in after them, says Jeffrey Patton, who runs beach operations.

Lifeguard Adam Legg was the first to rush in with his fellow guard calling for assistance.

"This is my 11th day as a lifeguard I've never been a beach guard before," Legg told WBZ-TV.

Legg and other guards were able to get the brothers onto the rocks. Legg recalled the satisfication of seeing the boys' hugging her sons after the ordeal.

"She was like, 'you're our heroes,'" Legg said. "We were just doing our job."
