Kingston Organization Raises $7,000 To Send School Uniforms To Orphans

KINGSTON (CBS) -- More than 500 school uniforms are on the way to orphans in Africa thanks to the efforts of Kingston students and a local organization.

Kingston-based charity Canterio International, whose mission is to help orphans in Africa get uniforms required for school attendance, received the donated clothes from students at Sacred Heart.

But the bags of clothes stayed stacked up in a family's basement because shipping them to another continent costs thousands of dollars.

WBZ-TV aired a story about the charity's problem earlier this month, and on Tuesday, it was announced that Canterio International had received more than $7,000 in donations.

The clothes were set to be shipped on Wednesday, students said.

Though the organization reached enough money to ship many of the uniforms, a representative from the group said more contributions are still needed.
