Man Wounded In Police Officer-Involved Shooting At Kingston Collection

KINGSTON (CBS) - A man was wounded in a police-involved shooting outside the Kingston Collection mall early Tuesday morning. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said a security guard patrolling the mall called 911 just before 3 a.m. saying a man was acting "threatening and erratically."

The man allegedly brandished a large knife and told the guard to get out of his vehicle.

Two Kingston Police officers arrived and Cruz said the man threatened them and shots were fired. The man, later identified as 25-year-old Alexander Bakutis of Plymouth, was shot once in the shoulder. Cruz did not say if one or both officers fired their weapons.

Police said Bakutis had a large knife in a sheath on his hip

"It's an unfortunate event," Cruz said. "Obviously police officers nowadays are very challenged in the decisions that they make."

Bakutis was rushed to a Boston hospital with what the district attorney said were "non-life threatening wounds." One of the Kingston police officers was treated by EMS "out of an abundance of caution," the DA said.

The officers' names have not been made public. The one who needed medical treatment has been with the department for 15 years.

"The police officers did a variety of things in order to try to quell the situation," Cruz told reporters at a news conference at the scene.

A large part of parking lot was blocked off with crime scene tape overnight and several items were scattered on the ground including a backpack, a large knife and a bottle of alcohol. Police also confirmed there was a police stun gun on the ground.

Bakutis has been charged with three counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. He is expected to be arraigned by Plymouth District Court on Wednesday.
