Keolis Taking Over Operation Of MBTA Commuter Rail From MBCR

BOSTON (CBS) – The start of a new month Tuesday also means a new operator for the MBTA's commuter rail.

Commuters won't notice a difference immediately but Keolis Commuter Services is taking over from Mass Bay Commuter Rail Co. after winning the contract from the MBTA.

MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott initially is looking for a seamless transition to the new company and she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Mark Katic that thus far things have gone smoothly.

As time goes on Scott is expecting to see more reliable service. New locomotives and cars coming to the commuter rail fleet over the next year will help.

Scott said Keolis' contract requirements along with better maintenance are more reasons she believes the company will deliver on expectations.

"Totally different maintenance operation," Scott said. "Much more in terms of a preventive maintenance program, so we expect to see an increase in reliability in terms of the fleet."

Keolis will also introduce a new app that will have schedules and, eventually, real time alerts on delays.
