Keller @ Large: Politicians Can Learn Lesson From Patriots' Win In Buffalo

BOSTON (CBS) -- We're very fortunate here in Titletown, USA to have our pro football team coached by a genius, to the point where the ritual weekly dismantling of an overconfident opponent delivers not only satisfaction as a fan, but important life lessons too.

The title of Prof. Bill Belichick's lecture Sunday in Buffalo was "Why Good Things Come to Those Who Wait: The Pitfalls of Unmanaged Expectations."

And even if you don't care about football, I hope you took notes.

The Buffalo Bills and their fans got all excited after a good win last week, and thought their chronic inability to beat the Pats was history. And it was.

History in the making.

They chanted "we want Brady" in Buffalo last Sunday. That turns out to be, in a world jam-packed with dumb chants, one of the dumbest.

Meanwhile, we see the first real signs of Donald Trump's poll numbers starting to recede, like an embarrassed tide. Trumps's most ardent admirers thought his string of strong summer polls meant a revolution was underway against the establishment, conventional wisdom, and the rules of etiquette.

They forgot that if a run atop the polls a year out from the convention was a sign of anything, President Rick Perry would be on the ballot running for re-election.

Same goes for Hillary Clinton groupies who thought she could just dribble out the clock and win the nomination. That never works when you start doing it in the first quarter.

Along with patience, the Patriots taught the political world another valuable lesson yesterday – it takes more than tough talk to knock out the status quo.

And imagine – they did it with fully-inflated footballs!
