Keller @ Large: Do They Feel Your Pain?
BOSTON (CBS) - Perhaps you're the relative of a soldier wondering if your loved one will be sent into harm's way overseas, or you have family stuck in one of the numerous war zones around the world that appear to be overheating.
I feel your pain. But do our political leaders?
I wonder after reading the sorry details of an apparent dust-up over US foreign policy involving President Obama and his possible successor, former Sec. of State Hilary Clinton.
By now you've probably heard that Secretary Clinton unloaded on the White House in an interview with the Atlantic Monthly.
Asked about the president's self-described foreign policy philosophy of "don't do stupid [stuff]," she said: "Great nations need organizing principles, and 'Don't do stupid stuff' is not an organizing principle." And of the president's "leading from behind" approach, Mrs. Clinton said: "When you are hunkering down and pulling back, you're not going to make any better decisions than when you were aggressively, belligerently putting yourself forward."
In just the last 24 hours, presidential allies have expressed their irritation over this, and some have pointed out the Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state when much of this policy was being made.
Meanwhile, her flack has claimed, hilariously, that she wasn't criticizing Mr. Obama.
But here's the rough part - the two will be at the same Martha's Vineyard party Wednesday Night, a situation that some worry "could be awkward."
Really?
I'm a bit more worried about the ineptitude of our foreign policy and the self-serving shallowness of some of its critics than I am about hurt feelings around the dip bowl.
But who am I to be so selfish in the presence of such great minds?
