Justina Pelletier Released Into Custody Of Her Parents In Connecticut

BOSTON (CBS) – Justina Pelletier, the Connecticut girl at the center of a long, nasty custody battle with Massachusetts officials over conflicting medical diagnoses, was reunited with her parents Wednesday after a judge ordered she be released.

The Rev. Pat Mahoney, who has been working with the Pelletier family to win Justina's release didn't mince words when speaking to reporters outside the Thompson, Conn., facility where the teen's parents picked her up.

He called the 16-month custody battle an injustice that should never happen to another family in America again.

The custody fight began with a disagreement over Pelletier's care between Boston Children's Hospital and Tufts Medical Center.

Tufts said the teenager had a rare disease while doctors at Children's maintained her problems were psychological and they accused the parents of medical child abuse.

The state of Massachusetts took custody of Pelletier when her parents and doctors at Children's Hospital clashed over her diagnosis and treatment in 2013.
