BOSTON (CBS) -- Regular viewers know WBZ political analyst Jon Keller's pet peeve is the often nightmarish driving habits of drivers in the area, and the impact it has on traffic and the daily commute.

This week, Jon decided to go right to the top official regulating licensing and registration--Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles Erin Deveney.

Jon asked Deveney about locals' bad driving.

"We at MassDOT take driving very seriously," Deveney said. "It impacts everything we do."

She said drivers mainly need to pay attention.

"Just getting in your car and driving and paying attention not only keeps you safe, it also helps with congestion, because people are moving and getting where they need to go safely," Deveney said.

With several collisions in work zones over the summer, Deveney said she's also concerned about work zone safety.

"We have people out there doing their jobs on the roadway, and if people pay attention to what's going on around them and drive more safely, it helps all of us," she said.

Deveney said the road test administered to would-be Massachusetts drivers currently has a passing rate of 63 percent.

"The rest of them have to come back after they've learned a few more skills," Deveney said.

Keller and Deveney also talked about educating cyclists and motorists on sharing the roadways of the Commonwealth with one another, and issues surrounding senior driving.
