Rutland Police Detective John Songy Loses Battle With Coronavirus

RUTLAND (CBS) -- A Rutland police detective died Friday morning from coronavirus. John Songy, of Leicester, was an eight-year veteran of the department. He was 48 years old.

"John passed away in the early morning hours of May 29, 2020, after a courageous and well-fought battle against the coronavirus," Rutland Police said a Facebook post.

On Friday, children placed flowers at the Rutland Police station. Flags were lowered to half-staff and black bunting was placed over the windows and doors of the police and fire departments.

"He fought a lot longer and harder than I think anybody ever expected," said Rutland Police Chief Nicholas Monaco. "He is a great man and a great police officer, completely beloved by this community."

"It is with a broken heart that I had to say good bye to my best friend and love of my life," his wife, Joanne Songy wrote on Facebook. "I would like to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for the prayers, love, and support that you have given to me and our family. I will post an update once his services have been arranged. God Bless you all."

In early May, Joanne pleaded for coronavirus survivors to donate plasma because Songy was struggling and in need of antibodies.

Two weeks ago, the Rutland community's dedication to Songy was on display when hundreds of police cruisers, firefighters, and cars paraded by St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, where Songy was being treated.

Joanne also had coronavirus but has since recovered.
