Boston Police officer released from hospital, accused shooter John Lazare held without bail

Police pack courtroom as man accused of shooting Boston officer arraigned

BOSTON - John Lazare, the Brockton man accused of shooting a Boston police officer, was allowed to hide his face in court Monday as a judge ordered him held without bail. The hearing came hours after the injured officer was released from the hospital.

Boston Police say Lazare, 23, shot the unidentified officer multiple times Friday night in Roxbury.

Lazare was arraigned in Roxbury District Court on several charges including assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

More than a dozen Boston police officers filled the courtroom for the hearing.

Lazare was allowed to stay behind a door during the proceedings.

A judge ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, which is scheduled for June 23.

According to investigators, Lazare was robbing a pizza delivery driver around 9:15 p.m. on Cedric Street when the officer spotted him. Lazare allegedly matched the description of someone wanted for robbing a delivery driver on the same street Wednesday.

The officer said he saw Lazare pointing a gun at the delivery driver.

Police said when the officer went after the suspect, Lazare started shooting, hitting the officer multiple times. Lazare ran away and was later seen on the roof of a building. Investigators said he jumped, landed in an alley and hurt his leg before he was arrested. Two other officers were hurt during the chase, but they were not shot.

Lazare has warrants out of two other courts, and police say his gun was stolen from Vermont.

"Any shooting of a police officer is of immense concern to all of us in law enforcement and society. The fact that this officer once worked as an investigator in our office makes it hit particularly close to home. I am relieved his injuries are not life threatening and I commend his bravery along with the other officers who were injured in this horrific incident," Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement.
