Mystery Image On John Hancock Tower Is Art

BOSTON (CBS) – It took more than a day to get an answer, but the mystery behind that giant image on the John Hancock tower is over.

The picture on the west side of Boston's tallest building is a temporary public art installation by the French artist JR, building owner Boston Properties said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

"The completed piece will be seven stories tall, measuring approximately 150' wide by 86' tall. It is installed on floors 44-50 of the 60-story tower and will be on view through mid-November," the statement said.

The installation on the tower, which is now known as 200 Clarendon Street, caught the eye of several people Wednesday morning and started a flurry of questions on social media.

"JR took the photograph during his travels and it is meant to be anonymous and mysterious, devoid of landmarks that might give away its location," Boston Properties said.

"JR selected this image in response to the building's architecture and surrounding cityscape. He used the tower's physical characteristics to create the artwork."
