Jets QB Geno Smith Out 6-10 Weeks After Breaking Jaw In Locker Room Altercation

BOSTON (CBS) —  The New York Jets can't get out of their own way, even before the NFL season begins.

Todd Bowles, in his first season as a head coach, had to make an interesting announcement on Tuesday. He had to tell everyone his quarterback, Geno Smith, will be sidelined at least 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw after being punched by teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in the locker room Tuesday morning.

"It had nothing to do with football," Bowles said. "It was something very childish, and he got cold-cocked, sucker-punched — whatever you want to call it — in the jaw.

"It was something very childish, that sixth-graders could have talked about," added Bowles.

Smith required surgery, and Enemkpali, an outside linebacker in his second season, was released by the team shortly after the incident.

It appears that Ryan Fitzpatrick will now be New York's starting quarterback to begin the season.
