Jeff Green Out Of Celtics Preseason Opener vs. 76ers

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Celtics will be without Jeff Green in their preseason opener on Monday night.

Green strained his left calf strain in Friday night's scrimmage at the TD Garden and sat out practice on Sunday. The Celtics don't see the injury as anything major, but will take extra precaution with the swing man as the preseason gets underway.

The Celtics will also be without center Vitor Faverani, who has been dealing with swelling in his knee since training camp began.

While nothing official has been said about rookie Marcus Smart, the sixth overall pick could make his Celtics debut on Monday as the team's starting point guard. Smart's status remains up in the air after he tweaked his groin over the weekend.

Head coach Brad Stevens said that if Smart plays on Monday, he will start at point guard in place of the injured Rajon Rondo.

Should Smart not be able to go, newcomer Evan Turner could get the nod at the point. Turner can also expect to see some time at small forward with Green out of the lineup. James Young, Boston's second of two first round picks in June's draft, could also see extended time on Monday night in Green's absence.
