Ice Cutters Make Way For Commuter Ferries On South Shore

BOSTON (CBS) -- Just as weather has caused problems on the commuter rail, it's also been an issue for the commuter ferries from the South Shore.

The harbor is full of ice after weeks of extreme cold, and that's why Boston Harbor Cruises has the Warren Jr. clearing the way for ferries.

"We have to keep going back and forth and hopefully getting through the ice," Skipper Tiger MacDonald told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens. "I've never seen anything like this before."

The ice cutter was able to part the ice for the ferry coming in and out of Hull, but so such luck in Hingham where the ice is just too thick.

Boston Harbor Cruises has been running commuter services on the water for the MBTA since 1997, principal owner Alison Nolan said.

"The only other time we've had to break ice like this was 2004," she said. "And this is even more extreme than 2004 was, more prolonged."
