Huge fire rips through former cereal factory in Orange

Massive fire destroys abandoned mill in Orange

ORANGE -- Firefighters battled a large blaze in Orange on Saturday. The flames destroyed a former cereal factory on West River Street, the fire department said.

Fire and smoke were coming from a vacant mill building and four others in the area when the first crews arrived at the scene around 11:45 a.m.

More than 20 regional fire departments helped contain what is considered a six or seven-alarm fire, Orange Fire Chief James Young said.

Two people were treated for injuries at the scene but neither needed to be transported to a hospital.

Residents were asked to stay away from the area.

The buildings were not occupied and no one was displaced.

It's unclear what started the fire or if anyone was in the building at the time.

The state Fire Marshal's office sent a hazmat team to monitor the air for health hazards.
