Thousands Of HP, Compaq Laptop Batteries Recalled For Fire Hazard

PALO ALTO, Calif. (CBS) – About 41,000 batteries for HP and Compaq notebook computers are being recalled because they can overheat.

The lithion-ion batteries with Panasonic cells are compatible with HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion laptops. The barcodes involved in the recall are 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL and 6EBVA.

So far, there have been seven reports of the battery packs overheating, melting or charring, causing property damage.

The recalled batteries were made in China and sold in stores like Best Buy, Walmart and Costco.

Consumers are being urged to take the recalled batteries out of their computers and contact HP for a free replacement.
