Lt. Eric Fricke says it was initially reported as an house explosion.

"It doesn't appear at this time that it was an actual explosion to the house but there was fire to the rear of the home that extended to the attic," he said.

They are fighting a "stubborn fire in the attic" and the only access point is "through a small scuttle hole," according to the Newton Fire Twitter account.

Brookline firefighters helped battle the fire, as Engine 1 and Ladder 2 were on scene, according to their Twitter account.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m., the fire was knocked down.

All out-of-town firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Firefighters are still tending to hot spots in the attic.

WBZ News Radio 1030 reports that a dog was rescued from the fire.

Neighbors say a couple and their two high school-aged children weren't home when the blaze broke out.

A firefighter was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital after suffering burns to his hands, according to Fricke.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Fricke says the fire doesn't seem suspicious.

The house is considered a total loss.
