Downed Wires Force Hopkinton To Cancel School For Day

HOPKINTON (CBS) - The town of Hopkinton cancelled school for the day Tuesday because of power problems.

Strong winds brought down two trees overnight on Ash Street. One tree landed on a home and the other took down power lines, knocking out electricity to the high school, middle school and Hopkins elementary school.

Because it happened so close to the start of the school day, the town said in a message to parents it was forced to cancel classes for everyone Tuesday.

"When the schools lose power, we cannot be in session," the town tweeted.

Nearly 700 customers in the area also lost electricity for several hours.
