Firefighters spent about 1 1/2 hours to get heavy fire knocked down, as firefighters dealt with hot spots that kept cropping up. The fire did significant damage to the rear side of the home, as well as the first floor and attic area.

Two people inside the home got out safely before firefighters arrived on scene. They have been displaced. A cat was rescued from the second floor of the house.

No civilians or firefighters were hurt in the blaze.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the porch area of the home.

A building inspector will be visiting the site on Sunday morning.

The State Fire Marshal was called to the scene, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters from Salem, New Hampshire, Lawrence, Georgetown, and Merrimac also responded.
