Man Charged With Stabbing Woman 30 Times, Abandoning Boy In Worcester
WORCESTER (CBS) – A man wanted for stabbing a woman more than 30 times in Connecticut and then abandoning her son in Worcester was captured Wednesday after more than 24 hours on the run.
Hartford Police said 23-year-old Edgar Manuel Maldonado was arrested without incident in midtown Manhattan around 5:30 a.m.. They received information about his location and relayed it to the NYPD.
Maldonado is accused of repeatedly stabbing his girlfriend in a car in Hartford early New Year's Day. Authorities say he then took the woman's 6-year-old son, drove him to Worcester, then left him and the car there.
The boy was found wandering alone on Providence Street in Worcester around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was later reunited with his family in Connecticut.
Connecticut police had entered the boy's information in a database of missing children. That allowed Worcester Police to connect the cases, just three hours after the attack. Hartford Police said they were in the process of preparing an amber alert when the boy was found.
His mother is recovering after six hours of surgery.
"A lot of the injuries were defensive wounds to the hands and arms, but she did suffer some critical injuries to her body and her torso. She is still in critical condition at this time," Hartford Police Lt. Paul C. Cicero told reporters at a news conference Wednesday.
Maldonado, who is not the father of the child, is facing charges of attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and risk of injury to a minor.
