Happy Mother's Day

After a cool, somewhat damp Friday when the temperatures failed to rise above the lower to middle 50s, it was about 25 degrees higher yesterday thanks to the passage of a warm frontal boundary early in the day. Boston's high of 80 wasn't close to the record of 94 set in 1979 but it was certainly a nice change for folks who have been craving the warm weather. The higher humidity made it feel even warmer. As an upper level short wave approached, a band of showers and boomers was triggered. Some areas especially north and west of Boston received a few minutes of pouring rain.

A cold front moved across the region overnight and it has shifted offshore so much drier air has arrived but the airmass is still warm so all systems are go for a splendid Mother's Day. Expect plentiful sunshine with a brisk westerly breeze and highs well into the 70s. The only problem is a high pollen count. It will cool off to the upper 40s to middle 50s tonight under a moonlit sky. Monday will be another warm day with highs of 76-80 degrees. There is a slight risk of a few spotty showers and storms later in the day.

There will be another drastic change on Tuesday following a backdoor cold frontal passage Monday evening. This will introduce a chilly northeast to easterly breeze which will cap temperatures in the middle 50s again. It looks like there will be a layer of clouds in much of the region without much of any rain. There is a slight risk of spotty mist or sprinkles. As a ridge of high pressure builds down across the Canadian Maritimes, it will be cool and a bit damp Tuesday night into Wednesday. As the ridge moves farther east, a southeast to southerly wind will propel milder air into the region Thursday and Friday. The air will likely be moist so lots of cloudiness will be present as the air turns more humid later in the week. Eventually, another frontal boundary will close in on the area to release some showery weather  next Friday.

Danielle Niles is updating the forecast on WBZ-TV and WBZ NewsRadio 1030 this morning. I will return later in the day for the 6:30 pm and 11 pm newscasts.

Have a great day!
