Green Line Operator Suspended After Girl Injures Arm In Door

BOSTON (CBS) - An eight-year-old girl was injured when her arm got stuck in the door of a Green Line trolley Monday night. As she recovers, that operator is off the job with an investigation underway.

"This is very, very negligent," Mitzia Felt said. "Plain and simple."

Mitzia Felt and her daughter Faith were taking the Green Line home Monday night as they have many nights. But when they tried to get off at Comm. Ave and Harvard, Faith almost made it off the train, Mitzia did not. The doors closed and her motherly instincts kicked in.

"I'm fighting the umbrella trying to get the door open and she's on the other side. I didn't notice that her arm was there. It's after the fact that I saw it. She's like, 'Ahh!' She started yelling and screaming and holding her hand. and I said, 'oh Jesus. She hurt herself.'"

The eight-year-old had turned around to reach for her mother, unaware the doors would close she says she and her arm were stuck for a minute.

"It really, really, really hurt and I can't believe that - they should have paid more attention," Faith said.

Once off the train, Mitzia says she called to the operator.

"He just said sorry, closed the door, and kept on going," Mitzia said.

The Brighton mother stopped a second operator who called an inspector. Faith was taken to St. Elizabeth's where doctors determined she had torn ligaments and muscle.

"Let's just say I didn't have the umbrella to stop the door from closing completely. What would have happened to my daughter? She could have been dragged, any number of things could have happened."

The operator is suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

"I'm very angry because it didn't have to happen," Mitzia said. "That should have never happened."
