Greater Boston Food Bank Volunteers Stock Thousands of Turkeys

BOSTON (CBS) – The Greater Boston Food Bank got a hefty head start on turkey donations this year.

An estimated 87,000 turkeys have already arrived at the Food Bank Thursday morning and hundreds of volunteers were on hand to off-load the donation truck.

The donations are part of the Food Bank's annual "Chain of Giving Event," which not only helps to stock Thanksgiving provisions, but also honors special volunteers.

Lynn Vocational Technical High School's football team along with the team's coach, Jason McCush, was among those honored this year. McCush has incorporated community service into the football program, including regularly volunteering at the Food Bank.

"It's a valuable way to feel important and involved in your community," said McCush. "Football teaches kids to be respectful and, you know, disciplined and mature, and doing community service definitely creates full all-around students."

The team also volunteers at homeless shelters and recently refurbished Lynn's park benches.

The Greater Boston Food Bank feeds an estimated 90,000 people a week.
