Grandparents Injured When Minivan Hits School Bus In Westboro
WESTBORO (CBS) – An elderly couple is in the hospital after their minivan went under a bus in Westboro Wednesday afternoon. Their grandchild only suffered bumps and bruises.
Police said solar glare prevented the driver from seeing the school bus.
Rescuers said the minivan was travelling westbound on W. Main Street, and the bus was turning out of the Westborough Country Club when they collided at about 4:30 p.m.
There were no kids on board the bus. It was the late bus for Assabet Valley and the last student had just been dropped off.
Police said Desiree White, 80, of Plymouth was driving the minivan. Ronald White, 79, of Plymouth was in the passenger seat. Their 11-year old granddaughter was in the back.
When first responders arrived, the girl was walking around. Her grandparents though were trapped.
"The body of the vehicle was collapsed around the driver so it took us some time to gain access to her, and then we required some assistance from a local towing company," said Chief Patrick Purcell of the Westboro Fire Department. "It was a very technical process that required a lot of people to accomplish."
It took crews two hours to free Desiree White. Her condition was too critical to use the Medflight and she was taken by ambulance to UMass Worcester.
