Golden Teapot Landmark In Government Center Removed For Repairs

BOSTON (CBS) - A Boston landmark has been taken down - temporarily - for repairs.

The Golden Teapot that sits above the Starbucks on Court Street in Government Center was removed from its perch late Monday morning.

The teapot was removed and put on a flatbed truck, May 9. (WBZ-TV)

It was apparently dented by a truck working in the area recently. It's not clear exactly how the kettle was hit. There is no police report, but there has been construction cleanup at the new Government Center MBTA station and the Big Apple Circus had been in the neighborhood for performances.

The steaming kettle is expected to be back in place in about six weeks.

The Teapot dates back to 1871. It was placed above what was once The Oriental Tea Company in Scollay Square and became one of Boston's most popular landmarks.

It's been moved several times over the years. The copper kettle holds 227-and-a-half gallons of water that produces steam.
