Man Killed In Gloucester House Fire

GLOUCESTER (CBS) – A man living by himself was killed in a fire at his home in Gloucester early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the single-family house at the corner of East Main and Hammond streets around 3:40 a.m.

"The first floor was fairly clear," said Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith. "Second floor was fully involved on arrival of the initial companies."

They found flames coming out of all the second floor windows.

The fire consumed the second floor of the home on Hammond Street. (WBZ-TV)

The firefighters made it up the stairs, where they found the victim, Smith says.

"We don't believe anyone else was home at the time," he said.

The man's name has not been made public.

A neighbor who knew the victim his whole life said "I was sad. I was upset."

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office were on scene Monday morning to determine the cause of the blaze.
