Garden Probing Collapse Of Netting That Injured 2 Bruins Fans After Game
BOSTON (CBS) – A witness told WBZ-TV's Sera Congi that two women injured at TD Garden Thursday night were having their picture taken with the arena in the background when, without any warning, protective netting came down on their heads.
It happened around 9:40 p.m., shortly after the Bruins shut out the Washington Capitals.
Boston police said the netting that normally protects the crowd from pucks collapsed into the seating area.
The two women told police they were taking a photo next to the glass behind the goal when they both were struck in the head.
It's unclear at this point what caused the netting to come down along with the pole that holds it.
The women suffered minor injuries.
Boston Globe photographers captured the dramatic scene as EMTs cared for the two young women who sat bleeding from their heads in the Garden seats.
The victims -- in their 20s -- were taken away on stretchers to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Their names have not been released.
A Garden spokesperson told WBZ-TV Friday that safety is their top priority and the incident is under investigation.
The netting, which is suspended above the glass behind the goals at the ends of the rink, was made mandatory by the NHL in 2002 after a fan died when she was hit by a puck in Columbus, Ohio.
