Funeral Held For New Bedford Police Chief

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (CBS/AP) — New Bedford's police chief was laid to rest after succumbing to respiratory arrest earlier this month.

Chief David Provencher was buried Saturday at Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Bedford, following a ceremony at St. Joseph and St. Therese Church, also located in the city.

A public memorial service will be held Sunday morning at the Zeiterion Theatre. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell and others are expected to reflect on Provencher's contributions to the community.

The 59-year-old served 35 years in the department, the last five of them as chief. He died Dec. 13 at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford after battling cancer.
