Phantom Gourmet: Frozen Burrito Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four frozen burritos at a local supermarket. The belly busting contenders were El Monterey, Evol, Good Food Made Simple, and Red's. See if you can guess which one ended up at the top of the food chain.

First up, El Monterey southwest chipotle chicken burrito. While the picture on the wrapper looked appetizing, Phantom was certainly skeptical if that's actually what he would find inside of his burrito. Surprisingly, the instructions call for this snack to be microwaved in the wrapper, and once it was done cooking, Phantom wasn't totally disappointed. While it wasn't pretty, the flavors were bright and tangy, with some decent spice.

Next up, Good Food Made Simple southwestern spicy chicken burrito. Made with sautéed veggies, brown rice, pepper jack cheese, black beans, and corn, the package says this burrito is all natural. And Phantom was pleasantly surprised to see plenty of those real ingredients inside the wrap. Unfortunately, their flavor fell a little flat, and the burrito was a bit too dry.

Evol chicken bean and rice burrito suffered a similar fate. On the upside, it's stuffed with plenty of wholesome ingredients, including chicken cooked with red chiles and plenty of pinto beans, which help impart an earthy flavor. On the downside, the cheese was barely there, leading to another dry experience.

At the top of the food chain is Red's. To start, this chicken and cheese burrito called for the unconventional cooking method of microwaving it between two plates. And while Phantom isn't exactly sure of the purpose, he's happy with the results. While some of the other brands may look more appealing, this burrito delivers where it counts. It's cheesy, gooey, spicy, and packed with nice chunks of chicken, delivering the kind of guilty pleasure meal Phantom was looking for. That's why Red's chicken and cheese burrito is at the top of the food chain.
