Five People Shot At Lowell Birthday Party

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Police say five people were treated for gunshot wounds after gunfire erupted at a late-night birthday party in Lowell.

The shootings occurred at the outdoor party at a home on Midland Street at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

A woman shot in the chest and a man struck in the leg were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Three other victims were brought to the hospital in private vehicles.

No names or conditions were immediately available.

The party was for someone turning 21.

Neighbors and some party-goers say they thought they heard fireworks before realizing it was gunfire. One neighbor told The Sun of Lowell he heard seven gunshots in quick succession.

There was no word on arrests, but police said the shooting does not appear to be random.
