Firefighter, Police Officer Save Man Who Collapsed In Newton

NEWTON (CBS) – An off-duty firefighter and police officer helped save the life of a father when he collapsed at his son's basketball game.

The 56-year-old man was at Newton North High School Tuesday night when he went into cardiac arrest.

There was a Newton police officer and an off-duty Attleboro firefighter at the game. They both rushed in to help and used a defibrillator to work on him.

Emergency crews arrived shortly after and were able to revive him.

"It's nice when an incident like this happens and all the pieces work together just like we'd always hoped they'd work, and we're able to achieve a really successful outcome," Newton Fire Lt. Eric Fricke said.

Officials say the man was alert when he was taken to the hospital. He remains in intensive care.
