Fire Suppression System Activates At Logan Airport Car Rental Facility
BOSTON (CBS) - A fire suppression system went off accidentally at Logan Airport's Hertz rental car facility Thursday morning.
There was no fire, but several vehicles were blanketed in a chemical said to be similar to baking soda.
The incident was not declared a hazardous materials situation but Massport told WBZ-TV that five people were taken to a local hospital strictly as a precaution.
It was unclear if those people are also Hertz employees.
The area where the leak occurred is not typically accessed by rental car customers.
Massport Fire and State Police are looking into why the fire prevention canisters activated above gas stalls at the Hertz location.
The facility opened about 10 months ago.
A cleanup crew was on scene within an hour evaluating methods for removing the foam.
Hertz employees told WBZ-TV they don't believe there is any permanent damage to the cars.
Hertz is the largest rental car company operating out of Logan Airport.
