Fire Hits Senior Housing Complex In Jamaica Plain

BOSTON (CBS) – An apartment building for senior citizens in Jamaica Plain was hit by a two-alarm fire Monday afternoon.

Flames broke out around 1 p.m. on the top floor of the seven-story Forbes Building on Centre Street.

According to the Boston Fire Department, it's a mixed use building with 147 apartments, most of them for elderly residents. Residents on the top floor were safely evacuated.

One resident suffered mild smoke inhalation.

A frozen hydrant close to the building posed a challenge to firefighters. The fire was contained by 2p.m.

Fire officials determined the cause of the fire was careless disposal of smoking material. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.
