2 Firefighters Injured Battling 3-Alarm Fire In Dorchester

BOSTON (CBS) – Two firefighters were injured battling a 3-alarm fire in Dorchester Thursday. There was heavy fire on the top floors and through the roof of the home on Stonehurst Street when firefighters arrived at about 8:15 p.m.

One firefighter was rescued from the third floor after he was overcome with smoke while fighting the fast moving flames. It became too intense and the crews were told to get out.

"We did have to strike a mayday because we had a report that one our firefighters was trapped," said Boston Fire Chief of Operations Andre Stallworth. "We were able to find him right away and get him out and he was taken to the hospital."

Firefighters were able to get him down a ladder and to safety. He is in the hospital in stable condition.

Another firefighter was taken to the hospital for a strain. Both firefighters are expected to be OK.

The family inside was able to escape before firefighters arrived. Four adults and two kids ran out. One resident told WBZ-TV's Katie Brace she has lived the home her whole life.

The fire was knocked down about 45 minutes after firefighters arrived.

The Red Cross is helping the six people who live in the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
