Felger: Bruins Re-Signing Kevan Miller 'So Bad But So Predictable'

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Bruins don't have a No. 1 defenseman. They may not even have a No. 2. So why do they keep overpaying for No. 6 blueliners?

The Bruins have agreed to a four-year extension with defenseman Kevan Miller, the team announced Tuesday. No. 86 played heavy minutes on the backend for the Bruins, averaging 19 minutes of ice time per game in 2015-16, but that was more out of necessity than as a result of Miller's skill level.

"It's so bad but so predictable," Felger said on the signing, before literally banging his head against his microphone in reaction to the news.

Miller started the season making a series of glaring, brutal mistakes on defense, but slowly improved over the course of the season and finished with career highs in goals, assists, blocked shots, and hits. However, a player like Miller should be easy to find in the minor leagues, at the draft, or elsewhere, at a fraction of the price.

"He's just a guy," Felger said. "And I know 2.5 million a year isn't exactly breaking the bank ... but you can't find somebody on an entry-level contract to do what [Miller] does?

"You should be able to fish around the league and find a guy like that for under $2 million a year and not have to commit four years!"
