Father Mourns Son Killed Outside Fenway Park On Thanksgiving

BOSTON (CBS) --  Jean Maryo Chery shook his head in disbelief just one day after learning his son Jephthe had been killed by gunfire.

"I don't know, I don't know why," Chery said.

Jephthe Chery, who would have turned 30 on Friday, was shot and killed Thanksgiving morning outside of the "Who's on First" bar near Fenway Park. Friends initially delivered the news to his family and police later confirmed it.

"I gotta cry everyday I gotta cry because my best friend, my best friend," Chery said of his son.

Jephthe, an MBTA commuter rail conductor, had shouldered the responsibility of taking care of his Haitian family.  And just how attached he was to his mother and father, even as an adult, brought a brief moment of smiles.

"100 percent he die, it's not easy for me, problem for me and my family," Chery said.

Police found a gun and shell casings at the scene, but there have been no arrests. The incident remains under investigation.

For the Chery's family, plans to celebrate Jephthe's 30th birthday are now replaced with grief.

"I just go to my room to cry because my stomach, my best friend," Chery said.
