Elderly Couple Killed In Worcester House Fire

WORCESTER (CBS) -- An elderly couple were killed in a fire at their Burncoat Street home Sunday night.

Emergency crews responded to the home shortly after 8p.m.

"Unfortunately it appears that the fire got a little head start on us and was undetected for a while before we got the call," Worcester Deputy Fire Chief John Sullivan told WBZ-TV.

Authorities believe the fire began on the first floor of the single family home.

The couple was rushed out of the home and taken to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Neighbors were startled by what happened.

"It's a shame at this time of the season, the loss of life a family has to go through this kind of sadness," neighbor Charles Camosse said. "It was a shock, we saw them go into the house and you could tell when the smoke was coming out, it wasn't good."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
