1 Dead, 1 Critically Hurt After Oxford, Maine Apartment Fire

OXFORD, Maine (AP) — The Maine state fire marshal's office says one person is dead and another is in critical condition after a fire at an elderly apartment complex in Oxford.

Authorities say both victims are women. Another dozen residents were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of the early morning blaze.

Fire officials say the fire broke out at the Oxford Meadows apartment complex along Route 26 at about 2 a.m. Saturday. They say the fire started in a common area and quickly spread thick smoke throughout the building.

Residents were transported to a nearby high school after being evacuated.

Fire marshals will be at the scene Saturday investigating the cause of the fire. Names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.
