Fare Evader Apologizes, Pays Hundreds Back To MBTA

BOSTON (CBS) -- A longtime fare evader has apparently let his guilt get the better of him.

Matthew Andrewes typed a letter to the MBTA admitting that he used to dodge fares and apologizing for not paying up.

"Several years ago, particularly when I was in my teens and early twenties, I used to try and avoid paying the train fare whenever I could. I'm so sorry," Andrewes wrote.

Andrewes then hand-delivered the note in an envelope along with $300 cash to the commuter rail ticket window at North Station.

Brian Shortsleeve, chief administrator of the MBTA, said in a statement that the agency, "very much appreciates his honesty and willingness to take responsibility for his previous actions."

"When some people dodge the fare, it's not fair to all of the others who pay it, and we hope his expression of regret will reinforce this message," Shortsleeve said.
