Everett Woman Killed In Haiti Robbery Remembered
EVERETT (CBS) - An Everett woman killed in her homeland of Haiti is being remembered as a passionate mother and beloved health care worker.
Myriam St. Germain, 40, was killed in a robbery just after arriving at the airport in Port-au-Prince.
"She died for nothing," said Michaelle St. Germain, one of her seven siblings. "It's a useless death."
Myriam was the oldest of her sisters and brothers and she was the leader who took special pride in organizing all family events.
"Our family has expanded tremendously and she's there for everything," said Marie Louise St. Germain, another sister.
Myriam was traveling to her home country of Haiti for a one week vacation to see family.
According to family members in Haiti, her driver was stopped in traffic and two men on motorcycles came up to the car with guns. The driver handed over some cash, and when Myriam looked for more in her luggage she was shot.
Myriam, a health care worker at Harvard, was a mother to 10-year-old Max and 7-year-old Elijah.
"She has a special education child she loves so much," said Michaelle. "And she's always worried how is he going to manage when he gets older."
The family wants justice for Myriam and a full investigation.
"And we don't want to bad mouth our country, but things need to change, and it needs to change now," said Marie Louise.
Myriam, along with her family, moved to Massachusetts as a teenager.
She and Michaelle were making plans to retire to Haiti.
"It's time for Haiti to rise up," said Michaelle.
The State Department does have a travel warning for U.S. citizens heading to Haiti, urging travelers to exercise caution and to "remain aware of the possibility of robbery".
