EVERETT (CBS) – Officers shot a sword-wielding man early Monday morning after what they say started as a call for a barricaded suspect at an Everett apartment building.

It happened early Monday on Bucknam Street.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said a 45-year-man was barricaded in an apartment. When police and SWAT team members arrived, the man allegedly came outside with a sword and advanced on officers.

Police said they used a non-lethal "sponge round" on the man, but it was ineffective.

Ryan said Everett Police then shot the suspect. The man was treated at the scene, then taken to a Boston hospital.

The man is expected to survive. An Everett officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
