Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Epping, N.H.

EPPING, N.H. (CBS) - A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Epping on Saturday night, authorities said. Forty-year-old Walter Welch Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene.

New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald and New Hampshire State Police say the incident occurred in the area of Exit 6 on Route 101 around 6:45 p.m. Police were initially called because a white pickup truck was driving erratically.

When state troopers came across the stopped truck, which was driven by Welch, "an encounter ensured. During the encounter, the Trooper discharged his weapon," MacDonald said in a statement Saturday night.

A gun was found in Welch's hand.

No troopers were injured during the incident.

The shooting is being investigated by the Attorney General's Office along with the State Police Major Crime Unit. There is no known video of the incident.

"This is an unfolding investigation and additional information will be provided as soon as possible while still protecting the integrity of the investigation," MacDonald said.
